West Gate Tunnel Project Completed

WGTP Bridge 82

Crisp Bros. & Haywards Pty Ltd have completed their works on the West Gate Tunnel Project in Melbourne, Victoria. The contract was awarded by CPBJH JV in May 2021 to the Haywards facility at Western Junction, just north of Launceston, Tasmania.

In expectation of an increase in large scale infrastructure projects, Haywards expanded their workshop capacity by constructing a new purpose-built facility in 2020. The facility increased overhead lifting capacity from 80T to 200T to accommodate the ever-increasing size of sections required in the current market.

Works consisted of the fabrication of 69 individual steel bridge girders sections, making up 3 bridge assemblies which serve as distribution lanes from the tunnel into the western end of the city. In total 5000T of steel was handled in the production, that is approx. 250 trailers of raw material coming into Tasmania and 69 large sections being delivered to the site in Victoria. Of the 69 sections transported, the largest section moved was 110T, 35m long and 5.5m wide.

Construction commenced in November 2021 and was completed in September 2023, 145,000 man hours were completed in this time frame. Over the duration of the project there was an average of 40 tradesmen and 5 apprentices working per week. All of Haywards’ current 15 apprentices working in this facility spent some time gaining valuable experience working on the project. With the inclusion of Haywards’ team of subcontractors there were a total of 80 employed per week to complete the project scope.

Crisp Bros & Haywards would like to thank everyone involved in the project, our loyal team of skilled tradesmen and apprentices. Subcontractors, Infrabuild, Fusion NDT, Survey Resources, Steel Force Industry Solutions, McElligotts, GJ Engineering, P&D L Engineering, SeaRoad and Tasmanian Heavy Haulage.
